The value of this object is the contribution of this port to the path cost of paths towards the spanning tree root which include this port. 802.1D-1990 recommends that the default value of this parameter be in inverse proportion to the speed of the attached virtual network. The path cost of the port is used jointly with its priority and its MAC address by the STP algorithm in order to classify the bridge ports in order of preference. Thge lower the cost, the better preferred is the port. This concept is used by the STP algorithm on initialization to elect the root port and when a loop is detected in order to determine which port is to be cut off. This is a decimal integer in the range 1 to 65535. The default value is '100'.
